GUILT AND OBSESSION

Since telling the truth about what happened to Connor that night was never an option, our story was that he got separated from us; we woke up and he was gone. Yeah, we felt guilty about lying, but the townspeople would simply make fun of us if we shared the truth. There was no proof; our phones were fried by the heat. It was better for everybody to blame Connor’s disappearance on something “explainable”, and it worked. The townspeople blamed his disappearance on a mountain lion. Everyone in town felt that if it happened to Kyle, it probably happened to Connor. It was ridiculous thinking by ridiculous people. Hunters came from all over the state determined to kill the “wild beast”. It was pure savagery. Several mountain lions were killed, and of course, no signs of human remains were found.

Even after several months had passed, people still searched for Connor up in the hills and throughout the desert; everyone in town helped, but of course I knew we would never find anything. I felt pretty crappy about having to pretend; especially when Connor’s parents would ask me to help out, but what was I to do? Sabrina and Amber would readily volunteer for every search outing and on a few occasions, organized the high school to help with the efforts. Maybe subconsciously they wanted to believe that as long as people were looking for Connor, there was some hope; yeah, I know, sometimes hope isn’t going to help.

Last week was a bit of a circus. First, a psychic, a dude by the stuffy name of Edward T. Cambridge, came to town saying that he “sensed” that Connor was not dead but simply needed to move out of state. The pressure of being a teenager in a small town had caused Connor to “crack”. The psychic suggested to Connor’s mom that Hawaii was really “tugging” at him and that Connor’s family should pay for him to go there to “investigate”. The poor woman was so desperate that she put her car up for sale to raise the money.

Thankfully, Tristen found out about it and told the psychic that he too had a vision. “You’re in very grave danger. You need to leave this town right away. My vision is that I will beat you to a pulp if you don’t leave town now…wait, wait, my vision was a bit off. Me and my friends will beat you to a pulp, and then you’ll go missing…there’s a lot of desert in Nevada.” I didn’t know a minivan could drive that fast.

The second thing that happened, the police brought in several cadaver dogs in hopes of at least finding and bringing home our friend’s remains. One of the cops was Paul, Mary Taylor’s husband. Yeah, part of me wanted to be suspicious of the coincidence but having the cops around made sense. Anyways, the dogs found the bodies of two old-time mafia bosses from the 1970’s that had mysteriously disappeared from a Las Vegas casino.
